Breast Cancer Awareness Month Is a Good Time to Discuss Your Mom’s Future Care Needs

An estimated 287,850 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The median age for a diagnosis is 62. If your mom’s doctor tells her she has breast cancer, it can cause anxiety and fear, but it’s also important to support her as she undergoes treatment. Here are the steps you need to take.

Focus on Moral Support and Transportation

Two of the most important things are going to be moral support and transportation. Your mom may have a lot of appointments with her oncologist and surgeon, and she won’t want to or be able to drive to some. Family members and close friends should make sure her transportation needs are covered.

She’s also going to need moral support. Try to arrange it so that she’s not alone at any appointment. At home, ask her how often she wants people stopping by. She may have days where she wants to be alone, and you have to respect that.

Take the Pressure of Daily Chores Off Her Plate

If your mom has a lot of daily chores like dishes, vacuuming, dusting, etc., hire someone to do these for her. Caregivers can make her bed, change her sheets, sterilize surfaces, and keep the floors clean of allergens, pet hair, and crumbs.

You can hire senior home care aides to cook your mom’s meals, get her drinks, and prepare snacks. They can also wash dishes, run the dishwasher, do the laundry, and bring in the mail. This way, your mom can focus on her treatments and getting enough rest.

If she has a mastectomy, she shouldn’t be lifting heavy items like grocery bags, laundry baskets, and packages that come in the mail. Make sure a caregiver is around to carry things into the home or from room to room.

Make Sure She’s Able to Avoid Outings to Crowded Areas

Some outings are best avoided. If your mom is in the midst of chemo and radiation treatments, she shouldn’t be out in large crowds where there may be people sick with the flu or other viruses like COVID or viral pneumonia. Until her immune system is strong, trips to grocery stores, restaurants, etc. are best avoided.

Instead, ask her what she needs and pick them up. You can also arrange home deliveries. Make it easier for her to avoid going out. If she needs to get out of her home, you could take a drive to a mountain trail, nature park, or secluded beach for a picnic or walk.

Arrange senior home care as soon as possible. Your mom can focus on her treatments and recovery. The rest of the family can be there for moral support. Talk to a senior home care specialist to talk about the ways they can help your mom as she undergoes breast cancer treatments.
